Scientists have invented a new self-healing material that can help to make self-repairing smartphones in the near future.

Self-healing material for self-repairing smartphones:

Do not worry about your smartphone drop and being shattered. Chemists at the University of California, Riverside have created a new stretchable and transparent polymeric self-healing material to build self-repairing smartphones and robots. This new self-healing material can self-repair your smartphones and other gadgets.

According to the reports, the new material is made up of “stretchable polymer and an ionic salt.” The self-healing aspect is enabled by the particular ions and molecules being attracted to each other. This material can conduct electricity and apparently has abilities to self-repair beyond just cuts and scratches.

It features a special type of bond called an ion-dipole interaction. Which is a force between charged ions and polar molecules? This means that when the material breaks or has a scratch. The ions and molecules attract each other to heal the material.

Several tests were conducted on the material, including its ability to repair itself from cuts and scratches. After they tore the material in half? It automatically stitched itself back together in under 24 hours as they put together. Said Chao Wang from the University of California, Riverside in the US.

A self-healing material, when carved into two parts, It will go back together like nothing has happened. Just like our human skin,” Chao Wang.

Self-Repairing Smartphones:

Latest smartphone makers like LG and Motorola have already included a similar material in their products. LG introduced self-repairing smartphones back cover on its devices like Gflex. Also, we can see a shatterproof screen on Motorola’s very latest Moto G series smartphones.

Wang predicts that this new self-repairing smartphones screens and batteries will available from 2020.

“Self-healing materials may seem far away for real application. But, I believe this will available very soon with self-repairing smartphones,” he said. Within three years, more self-healing products will go to the market and change our everyday life. It can make our smartphones achieve much better performance than what they can achieve right now.
